Project details

ScienceScope has developed some novel visualisations of scientific data using tools provided in Google Earth and Google Maps. The aim of this EngD project will be to extend considerably the possibilities of creating informative and engaging ways of presenting location-based visualisations of data. Initial ideas for development include:

• Creation of a system which allows location in context (using Google Earth say) to be played alongside real time video and head up data display.
• Using data from sensors to create a map overlay which reflects data values on a two dimensional plane in colour.
• Three dimensional data presentation (on a 2D screen) of scientific data.
• Use of multiple displays to generate wide screen visualisation for science education.
• Opportunities to build games around the visualisations created in these contexts.
• Evaluation of the technology in both formal and informal settings.

The successful candidate should have a good first degree in a relevant subject, such as computer science, human-computer interaction or psychology
