Viva success for Daniel Finnegan

Our congratulations this week go to CDE RE Daniel Finnegan who has successfully defended his thesis 'Compensating for Distance Compression in Virtual Audiovisual Environments'.

Dan joined CDE in 2012, and since then has been working extremely hard on his research, which lies in the domain of human computer interaction (HCI) and focuses on the engineering and psychological aspects of virtual reality (VR); software development and human perception.

The emphasis is on audiovisual environments where both sounds and graphics are rendered in 3D.  Dan developed prototype systems that integrate with industrial game engines in order to conduct perceptual studies and published his results into human perceptual responses of 3D VR environments.

Dan completed his placement with Somethin' Else Sound Directions in London under the supervision of Mr Rob McHardy, Prof. Eamonn O'Neill and Dr. Michael Proulx.

On hearing of his success, Dan said.....

"I’m delighted to have passed my viva. The past few years have been a whirlwind journey during a turbulent time in virtual reality.

I’m looking forward to continuing my research into spatial audio engineering as well as human centred studies focused on perception in VR".

We wish Dan every success in his future.
