Congratulations to Dr Lisa Haskel who has now, officially, successfully completed the CDE EngD. I am sure that you will all join us in congratulating her on her success. More details on her research in Sustainability through Participatory Design will be available shortly on the CDE website.
Congratulations also go to Ifigeneia Mavridou who has had two papers accepted at the IEEE VR 2017 conference taking place in Los Angeles in March. One of the papers ‘Altering User Movement Behaviour in Virtual Environments’ is a collaboration with Portsmouth University. We wish Ifigeneia every success at the conference and look forward to hearing more about it when she returns.
On behalf of the Service Systems Group, WMG, University of Warwick, we are pleased to announce that the fourth Competitive Advantage in the Digital Economy (CADE) Forum has opened its submission system!
This year, CADE has been merged with the Service Systems Forum to form a single event focusing on the digital economy. CADE 2017 is to be held on 1st-3rd June 2017 Venice, Italy.
The aim of this year’s CADE Forum is to provide opportunities for academics and practitioners to share the latest research and practice on topics related to the three research themes of smart service systems, digital innovation, and trust and privacy in the digital economy. CADE will feature six keynote speakers from leading academic scholars working in the domain of the digital economy, and participants will have the opportunity to present in a friendly and intimate environment. There will also be awards to recognise the best presentations of the Forum.
CADE 2017 is sponsored by WMG's Service Systems Group and Surrey CoDE (University of Surrey’s Centre for the Digital Economy).

For CDE2 students, we have the opportunity to offer funding for international visits, of one month minimum, so that you can experience different cultures.
There will be a rolling competition for funding of up to £5,000 per CDE2 student for an international visit.
DEN is offering another funded 2-day PhD Writing Retreat at The Woodlands at Hothorpe Hall, in the rural setting of Theddingworth in South Leicestershire.
This event gives current Digital Economy CDT PhD students the valuable opportunity to solely focus on a piece of individual or group writing in a time structured environment, along with other PhD students from other Centres for Doctoral Training, as well as having time to network during breaks and in the evening.
The facilitated retreat will take place on Tues 21-Weds 22 March 2017, starting at approx. 9am on Tuesday 21 and finishing at 5pm on Wednesday 22 March.
DEN can fund up to 25 places, which includes: attendance fee, overnight bed and breakfast in en-suite accommodation at The Woodlands/Hothorpe Hall, meals and refreshments; including the group evening meal on the night of 21 March 2017. Car parking is available onsite free of charge. The nearest train station is Market Harborough which is a mainline station and is only 5 miles away.

Please be advised that registration is now open for the Digital Economy Network All-Hands Meeting, which will take place on Wednesday 1 February 2017 at the Digital Catapult Centre in London.

The main event will begin with registration at 9.30am for a 10.00am start, and will run until 3.00pm. Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided.
Speakers are wanted for Café Scientifique – Bournemouth. You can choose which month suits you best!
Cafe Scientifique is a popular and relaxed event that runs on the first Tuesday of the month at cosy Cafe Boscanova. Speakers give a short presentation around a chosen topic/area of research (roughly 30 minutes) before opening up to the audience for questions.

Big Bang Bristol is a two day Science Technology Engineering and Maths fair taking place at the Trinity Arts Centre, Bristol on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th July 2017. Designed to fire students’ passion for all things STEM, our aim is to encourage students from all backgrounds to continue their interest in STEM subjects and propel them into further study and a successful career in STEM. Importantly they are looking for students to be inspired by the varied careers STEM can take them into, from cutting edge materials research to science communication. The fair is split into two sections with demonstrations and hands-on activities, from companies in The Enterprise Zone and researchers and students in The Research Zone. We want you to take part in The Research Zone.
The Research Zone will host 20+ researchers from all STEM fields. They are looking for researchers to develop an activity to demonstrate their research to students in the most hands on and engaging way possible.
We would like to invite you to participate in the workshop on Computer Animation Techniques, which will held at Bournemouth on June 23, 2017 and join the international conference Edutainment 2017 in June 26-28.
The “AniNex” (http://www.aninex.org) is an EU FP7 funded exchange project, which is designed to prepare and lead the
development of next generation techniques related to computer animation and its applications. The workshop will be
coordinated as part of the Edutainment conference programme at Bournemouth in June 2017
We would like to invite submissions of posters to disseminate the research at the workshop, which covers topics related to
computer animation techniques and digital content generation.

The latest research seminar of the Centre for Games and Music Technology Research will take place on Wednesday 1st February 2017, PG11, Poole House, Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University.
This research presentation, by Long Chen, will demonstrate a novel approach of using augmented reality technology to provide rich additional information for Minimally Invasive Surgery. The research addresses a number of challenges in terms of dealing with monocular visual sensor, and 3D surface reconstruction via state of the art computer vision algorithm.
We have organised some joint Public Engagement Training with the other CDTs based at Bath.
This is a fantastic opportunity and we strongly recommend that you participate in the training. We have received really good feedback from others who have taken the courses, and it will also look great on your CV – especially if you go on to use it.
There are two training sessions, one is a ‘Designing a Creative Public Engagement Activity’ workshop and the other is a ‘Non-Academic Writing’ workshop.

The Festival of Learning will take place at Bournemouth University, 8-12th July 2017. CDE will be taking part this year, we will showcase some of your research. This could be a poster or any interactive demos you may have. We welcome any event suggestions and ideas you have to bring this event to life. We have requested space for Saturday 8th July, the family day, so your display can be fun / interactive and could even showcase previous projects you have completed. The FOL, celebrating its 5th year, represents a wonderful celebration of learning, the Festival showcases BU’s research and expertise to a wide and varied audience, including local communities, staff, students, employers and alumni around the world.
Remember to send me your photos so that we can showcase the life of the CDE student more visually on the website. Send in pictures that show what you have been up to regarding your research, projects you may be involved with on your placement (with the agreement from your company) or conferences you’ve attended or presented at.
