CDE is sponsoring CVMP 2020
CDE are very proud to being sponsoring the 17th ACM SIGGRAPH European Conference on Media Production (CVMP 2020)
CVMP bring together production and post-production specialists from the worlds of film, broadcast and games with imaging and graphics researchers; it brings together expertise in video processing, computer vision, computer graphics, animation and physical simulation.
CVMP provides a European forum for presentation of the latest research and application advances, combined with keynote talks on state-of-the-art industry practice.
CVMP will be taking place online this year on 7th and 8th December 2020.
Summer research jam
Students from the CDE took part in our first ever Virtual Research Jam bringing together their skills to looks at problems in Virtual Based AR for Surgical Theatres.
This year’s annual summer event, brought together the worlds of academia, industry and surgical professionals, to use the skills and knowledge the CDE Research Engineers are gaining during their four year EngD programme, and putting it into a different real world application that could benefit the NHS.
The 4 day event run entirely online began with keynotes from Sunil Bhudia, Co-Lead of Cardiac Surgery at Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust who outlined a use case of how to use Augmented Reality (AR) to help address issues faces by surgical teams in the operating theatre.
This is the first time we have run this type of event virtually but the forced move online due to COVID-19 threw up both challenges and opportunities. The event has been a great success and cohort building exercise at a time when both the students and organising team have been so isolated at home. It encouraged project management, team building, communication, and presentation skills. We are all looking forward to seeing how the final ideas may be developed further and we look forward to working with other partners on similar events in the future
Huge thanks to Kish Hirani for all his help planning and hosting this event. Kish and Sunil were joined by a team of mentors to support and guide the student teams. Huge thanks go out to our industry mentors, Thomas Dolby and TJ Matthews from AiSolve Limited, Josh Naylor from Iridescent Digital, Sam Muscroft from Medtronic, and Dan Miller from Unity Technologies. From Bournemouth University, Ian Stephenson, Oleg Fryazinov, Dr Hammadi Nait-Charif and Mara Catalina Aguilera Canon. Thanks to Neill Campbell, Christof Lutteroth, and Christian Richardt at University of Bath and Surgical mentor Ulrich Stock from Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust.
Welcome to 3 new researchers
We are thrilled to be welcoming 3 new PhD students to the CDE group. Mesar Hameed started with us just before Lockdown and Will Kerr and Manuel Rey Area joined us at the end of September.
BEYOND Conference 2020 will be taking place virtually from 30th November to 3rd December 2020.
BEYOND is an annual gathering of current and future innovators focused on Research and Development across the creative industries.
This year's conference will feature speakers from the worlds of theatre, music, gaming, TV and film.
Registrations are now open.
New CDT at University of Bath
The UKRI CDT in Accountable, Responsible and Transparent AI (ART-AI) is opening a call for new partners and collaborations.
We bring together researchers from across the University to train the next generation of specialists with expertise in AI, its applications and its implications. Now in our second year, over the course of the centre’s life we will recruit and train at least 60 PhD students from diverse backgrounds, including existing experts in AI, but also from engineering, social science and policy backgrounds to help ensure that developments in AI, and decisions on how and when to use it or not, are informed and ethical. ART-AI will produce interdisciplinary graduates who can act as leaders and innovators with the knowledge to make the right decisions on what is possible, what is desirable, and how AI can be ethically, safely and effectively deployed.
In the CDE, students spent much of their time in partner organisations. We will build on this experience, sending students to partners to work in a team, learn from professionals and gain exposure to tools and methods. Whilst we are always looking for co-creation of research projects, we also welcome partners who would like to collaborate in other ways such as internships, short term project based placements, training, workshops and/or speaking to our students as a keynote or as part of a seminar series.
More information on the centre, our programme, our partners and our students can be found on the ART-AI website
If you are interested in finding out more about collaborating with ART-AI please contact Zoe Graham firstname.lastname@example.org
Thomas Matthews' research paper “Interaction Design for Paediatric Emergency VR Training” has been published in Virtual Reality & Intelligent Hardware in August, authored with his academic supervisor Feng Tian and industry supervisor Tom Dolby. Congratulations also to Kat Wojna who had her demo paper accepted at Eurohaptics 2020. Her demo is from her EngD research 'Natural User Interaction and Multimodality' with her partner Ultraleap and supervisors at University of Bath. A video of her demo is available here.
Great news also for Asha Ward whose article 'Music Technology and Alternate Controllers for Clients with Complex Needs' has been published in OUP's Music Therapy Perspectives. Asha's EngD research is taking place with 3 Ways School in Bath and supervisors at Bournemouth University. You can read the article here.
